Final Major Project. Initial Ideas.

Moving on from last years artistic practise I want to develop a new way of working. During my previous work, I focused on the buildings in their entirety, however, for me the windows were the most interesting part. Stained glass is beautifully intricate and is something which intrigues me. Not only are they decorative in there own way, but the luminescence given by the light also brings them to life, portraying them as ever-changing artworks.

York Minster has one of the largest collections of surviving medieval glass in the world, upon my visit to the Minster last year the windows were certainly one of my main interests within the architectural structure. The shapes and repetitive patterns were somewhat of a stand out feature, floral and filigree patterns appear to be just as important within the windows as they do within the stonework on both the outside and the interior of the Cathedral.

Within this project, I want to develop my own set of stained glass windows, using different materials and experimenting to achieve a modern take on something medieval. The work will take on a sense of luminescence and focus on the use of colour to bring a space to life.
