The Secular.

Secular STAINED GLASS

The definition of the word secular means something not connected with religion or spiritualism. The designs of secular stained glass hold no religious connotations, nor is it produced to be displayed within a building linked to religion.

During the group crits the idea that my work links to religion continued to arise and although this may be where the process stemmed from, I don't wish for my work to continue to hold the same connotations. I want to progress my practice and create something which moves away from the idea that stained glass has to be something religious.

To do so I found myself researching into examples of stained glass in secular spaces, with some artists in which I researched earlier such as Liz West and John Piper. I felt that there was a need to further my knowledge and expand my research to find more secular stained glass artists.

The image on the left is an installation at the Whitworth art gallery in Manchester. The stained glass sculpture spins on a motor, meaning that the colours thrown onto the wall are constantly changing.
